Details, Details

Wednesday, August 6, 2008

Yesterday was Tuesday, which, around here, means Market Day.   I was volunteering at the Art Association booth, but took a couple of tours around the tents to take in the wares.  As I was photographing a basket of beets, someone (who knows me) asked if I had "a vegetable fetish" because he'd seen me do this for several weeks.  I laughed.

Grandfather aside, growing up no one could get me within 10 yards of a stalk of broccoli.  Little by little I (and my parents) expanded my comfort zone to include cucumbers, onions, carrots, mushrooms and, yes, broccoli.  Today I will eat nearly any regular veggie or green in some form, though I have never been able to choke down turnips, parsnips, beets, radishes or lima beans.  But I digress...

My constant photographing of vegetables and flowers is more about the plays of colors, subtle and bold, and the textures, delicate and tactile.  I've been fortunate these past few months to photograph beautiful food prepared by chefs.  But I'm drawn to simplicity and amazed by nature and the perfection of all things--even in their IMperfections.  The details, when one stops to really look, are not so simple after all.

Thank you for your comments on my last entry.  I much appreciate them.  Some of you take time to tell me about your experiences and share your thoughts.  I don't always publish all the comments because of length and content, but I do read them and thank you for your interest in this site.  I am hoping to take a day trip soon, maybe even to Rockaway Beach.  The shop keeps my freelance schedule to a minimum.

Today's photos are details of everyday veggies:  garlic, peppers, the amazing beets, mushrooms.

    Glynis,
I always love reading your articles and your pictures are absolutely the best! As you are referring to Rockaway Beach, I was wondering if it was intended for me - I met you a couple of weeks ago, on my birthday, in your shop, and mentioned that we had a home in Rockaway Beach!
Our daughter is also a photographer,(well, loves photograhpy and works at a small studio) and I want to introduce her to your website - I know she would love it also.
It was a pleasure to meet you and taste some of your wines - you are most gracious.
I hope to see you again sometime and I hope you will enjoy Rockaway Beach when you get there!
    Warm regards, Marlene

Glynis, there are obviously many of us that appreciate your photography and your writing. To reiterate, your "Farm Livin'" offering touched my soul, for several reasons. Simply, Thanks again.
