Remnants of Summer
Friday, September 28, 2007
I photographed this spot last year, as I did this morning, for cannon-beach.net and this website. I like this thicket, this hedge of wild, runaway roses. It has to be hardy because it's right on beachfront, and there does seem to be more of it than last year as I ponder.
Last night's rain has left drops on the remaining flowers. While I shoot, I notice the rose fragrance still hanging on in the air like the petals. But there's an uplift to the sadness of the end of summer and the flowers and the fragrance: the beautiful rose hips like fall berries are all different colors. The reds and golds and oranges start reminding me of October and cider and Thanksgiving and November clouds, and I don't miss the summer at all.
