(Very) Stormy Weather

Sunday, Dec 17, 06

On Thursday, "the worst storm in a decade" blasted the northwest coast. The highest recorded gust I've seen so far is 95mph, but, living a block from the beach, I would guess there were some pretty high un-recorded gusts.

Driving home to CB from Astoria during the storm Thurs afternoon, I plotted my escape plan for the car flipping over the guardrail into Young's Bay as I hit the winds straight on (luckily, I didn't need the plan.) I pressed on hoping for a sheltered area only to wonder if the trees would fall on me as I drove past. This, as it turns out, wasn't such a silly thought--several of the trees I scoped out were torn apart and chain-sawed when I drove through again on Friday. Overall, though, I was surprised at how minimal the damage was.

We (in CB lost power from Thurs morning to Sat evening--in my case that meant no heat, no lights, no stove--and my cell phone service was also out.  Cassy was miserable and in pain, having re-injured a leg the week before. I stayed up with her both nights, and friends at the Inn at Cannon Beach gave us a room with a gas fireplace on Sat to help her get warm--thank you so much for that.  She fell asleep there, exhausted, around 4 pm, and the lights came on around 5:45 pm.

Here are photos from Friday, first, in the morning---thick foam everywhere, the surf coming up the banks. The last two are late afternoon, where, after a sunny intermission, a second act opened up.
